Nelo Surfski

The excellent reviews keep coming

The Nelo 560 Surfski just got two thumbs up in a comprehensive test and review by Garth Spencer, elite surfski athlete and current race organiser of King and Queen of the Harbour (Auckland).

After blasting around the flat water time-trial course as fast as my little heart and skinny arms would permit, I would be told:

"Jeez, Spencer - that's the fastest I think I've seen you paddle, ever."

So there you have it. Boat review completed haha.

Fortunately, the review goes on and Garth concludes:

...[T]his is currently my boat of choice in ocean racing, and I think it comes alive in the moving ocean.

Here's what the team at Performance Paddling had to say:

Anyone considering an elite ocean ski would be most suitable for the 560.  The stability is very similar to the alternatives but it has possibly a lot more to offer. The shorter length and more responsive acceleration makes paddling more dynamic and feels more fun.

Performance Paddling Review

T&C Surf had a great paddle on a couple of the Nelo surfski models:

My first impression consistent across all the Nelo boats was the “Needle Nose” feeling while looking forward over the bow. It is  narrow and well rounded providing a great catch. The seat position feels higher than most surfskis  providing a definite K1 Sprint Kayak feel.   This of course is no surprise owing to Nelo’s strong heritage as the undisputed king of the K1. Most would agree that the ergonomics of a K1 are the most optimal, but to get manageable stability for the ocean we have to compromise.  Nelo seems to have found a sweet spot where the boats still feel a lot like K1s while still having solid stability.

Blogger photo fr concluded in his review on surfski.info:

The new 560M is a shorter surfski that’s surprisingly more responsive than other skis people are used to. It excels for shorter and super light paddlers (though I am told the standard 560 is well-geared towards bigger paddlers like Oscar). When it comes to flat water paddling, the 560M doesn’t disappoint.

Designed by the best

Nelo's latest surfskis have been designed with the help of Oscar Chalupsky, 12 time World Surfski Champion. They're a gorgeously curvy needle-nose ski with a wider back for added stability exactly where it’s needed.

Features of the Nelo Surfski range:

  • Durable materials
  • Quality fabrication and construction
  • Versatile: quick to change settings between paddlers
  • Flatwater, sea or surf
  • Excellent manoeuvrability on water and land
Nelo Surfskis are more reactive to body shifts, and more maneuverable downwind should yield more fun, better average speed, and less paddling fatigue. Keeping the bow into the “hole” will be faster from a more responsive ski, and will allow you to “lock in that wave” longer than ever.

The complete package

All models come with:

  • Wave deflector
  • Foot-operated bailer
  • A surf rudder for downwind racing
